It's been some time since Annie left the residential arm. 3 months stuck in the dock had taken it's toll and Annie was looking rather tatty - particularly inside, with coal dust, sawdust, bags of recycling and the like filling every space. A few hours tidying at the end of march means I can now take an internal picture without too much embarrassment!
26th of March saw the arrival of my new neighbours. Great to have some company and good luck to them on their new liveaboard lifestyle. I've already benefited from Pimms and Cake!

The following day I was finally let out from under the footbridge for my first journey of the year. Amazing weather knocking 20 degrees!! Great (if rather familiar)view whilst leaving the dock.

Swinging right into Leeds lock things weren't quite so rosy. Once into the lock beside another narrowboat it quickly became apparent we weren't going anywhere very fast. The electrically powered lock decided to lock us in as the paddles stuck down. This meant we couldn't drop to river level and spent the next 45 mins waiting for Mr BW to come and help us out. No rush so just chatted with the other boat and sat on the lock with a coffee. Even the river equivalent of roadworks couldn't spoil the fun!

Once out the other side first stop Leeds Lock Facilities. Stopped on the pontoon and did my stuff. And then started the unenviable task of cleaning my cratch! All the junk was dragged off, including several tonnes of Ash, recycling, rubbish and wood! And then a bit of magic with the mop and Bingo!

Once all sorted out I continued downstream at snails pace and turned just beyond Knostrop Flood Lock. River very shallow and muddy today so took a while to wind. Barge pole useless in this mud!
After a couple of nights on the visitor mooring it was up to Granary Wharf to meet Matt, Caleb, Amber and Sienna for a bit of fun.
After some unsuccessful fishing with the nets they all seemed very keen to have a go so we set off into River Lock with clear instructions to keep all limbs in the cabin! Once out the lock Sienna had a crack at driving and within seconds was telling me how easy it was. A natural! And Amber too was very capable. 15 mins later we were back at Clarence Dock without incident.

Snow arrived again quite abruptly last weekend. Cold, windy, and very slushy at 7am following my nightshift.

Christmas and New Year was all good - and best wishes to you all - although plenty of time was spent at work but did have a few days before & christmas day off . However it seems winter hasn't really arrived and in it's place we have windter which for me is way more problematical. 65mph winds in the new year (when scotland nearly blew away), and 55mph again last weekend. I've lost another Chimney Hat (now wired to chimney - and I have a big magnet to retrieve anything else I may lose overboard!) , worn away part of the cratch cover with ropes and snapped a fairlead due to the Wind. On the leisure moorings a pontoon was damaged and subsequently removed - and our resident submarine had their Aerial snapped in half!
As well as the windy weather we've also had a couple of weeks locked into Clarence Dock with the Aire being high. Highest I've seen it since arriving last April, over the footpath at Crown Point Bridge and almost over Leeds Lock and back into the Aire

Terrible picture but note the water spilling over the left back into the river.
Finally managed to visit the Royal Armouries at Clarence Dock. It is worth a visit, but doesn't really create the same atmosphere as the Tower of London. Still need to visit again to take a look round the upper floors.
As you can see I never made it back to my official mooring - at least until last Tuesday. Thought i'd try and get back incase everything froze over. Of course after arranging to have the footbridge opened to get back in, I woke up to a few centimetres of ice on the side of the boat, and a quite sturdy sheet of ice across the dock! Beautiful calm morning but SUPER cold. I had fun reversing slowly through the ice into my spot. The crackling, gurgles and popping noises from the breaking ice was really quite fun - but did make getting past Lyra (hard not to call it lycra) sticking out on the pontoon an interesting maneouvre as I can't steer in reverse and the ice pushed me off course!

The scene of devastation following my manoeuvres through the ice. (Lyra to the right)
So far no alien objects on the roof (been back in 1.5 weeks) - just a bit of noise as expected friday/saturday night.

I have a new neighbour due to arrive soon too which should nice - no details yet but hope we're talking about a narrowboat rather than something huge!
Last friday I moved over the canal to the stepped moorings outside the Mint Hotel to get water and top up with power. Was a windy few nights as the gales blew and Annie rolled and slammed against the dock wall! But at least it meant water (hot as well) and a weekend of iplayer!

Annie has now moved outside the Mint hotel (far left of picture beside Bonnie)

Thanks to the crew from the Kirkstall Flyboat (http://www.tripboat.co.uk/) who helped me move back over the canal to a safe mooring late on Tuesday with more high winds forecast. Give them a call if you fancy sampling the Leeds Waterfront or have any party requirements!
Last Sunday we drove (by car) to Donna Nook in N Lincolnshire after reading http://nb-triskaideka.blogspot.com/ and checking out the fab pictures. Wasn't sure what to expect - would there be anything there? After a 2.5 hour drive it was a case of fingers crossed! Pictures to follow shortly.

As it turned our there were over 1100 pups born this year, most of which had been left by their parents to fend for themselves by the time we got there. A most impressive sight and nowhere else have I managed to get this close to wild seals on land. Can't recommend it enough but do remember they are likely to have all left by the end of December until they arrive back on the beach in November for another go. Fat, cute, furry friends they were.
Well I'm back at Clarence Dock - final manoeuvre is to get back into my residential arm. Will probably leave this until after my nights on Monday. Hopefully it'll be a nice calm day and the residents of the flats will not be too disturbed by my presence, and refrain from bombarding me! Big apologies to the NB in front of me who I rammed whilst mooring up. Lost my reverse power just at a critical time - I've since retrieved a hoody and an anorak from my prop - I wonder how it went round at all! Guess I'm likely to be stuck here for a couple of months, especially if things freeze over again as per the last post. So far just a bit of sleet, and those strong winds - little to get too excited about.
A nice quiet spot and it means not getting charged and harassed by the lovely people at the Estate Office!

However this morning I ran out of water and wood having totally forgot to fill up before leaving the dock last week. This causes a couple of issues including lack of shower and also risking breaking the water pumps when I turn a tap on! So decision to be made - back to Clarence, or up through Office Lock to the water point. Neither seem like an attractive proposition following a 12hr shift, getting back at 7.30am, and feeling zombified. So maybe a shower at work will do, and a few litres of tescos finest water! At least until friday when I'm done.

Last couple of weeks we've been over to Cumbria(St Bees) to visit Pete and Michelle and the little nephews. Great timing as York City were away at Barrow, which of course finished 0-0 much to my annoyance. Baby Edward and James were in good form though. Nice walk to the beach and back.

Now it's December and the wintry weather has finally arrived - Frosty this morning and nearly as bad inside the boat. Took 3hrs of central heating to get things warmed up and still needed full thermals and extra blankets to get off to sleep. Have a delivery of wood and coal on the way so only temporary. With the stove going it gets too hot sometimes, but does mean a nice warm glow - even after a few hours sleep. I have some good shots of Clarence Dock all locked up with ice from last christmas when I did my recce on the mooring. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens this time round.
All Christmas shopping still do - but plenty of time yet right?

Oh and check this link out - A rather amusing wiki about Narrowboats!
Hopefully I haven't upset too many people mooring here for a few weeks. To avoid the mother of all parking tickets I shall move back up to Granary Wharf next Friday!

Only boat news are my attempts to get a winter cover for the stern, to cover the gaps on the hatch/doors. It's been surprisingly warm so far but the bedroom(at the back) does get rather nippy, and the wind in Clarence Dock is my main enemy. Hopefully this won't be too expensive - we shall see.

Last week we took the train down to London to attend the Annual Fortean Times Unconvention! As usual there was plenty of weirdness and weirdos, and the highlight was probably a lecture about intelligent dogs and horses trained by the Nazis. Very amusing subject and delivered by Jan Bondeson a rather eccentric Scandinavian fellow. I can also recommend the Butcher and Grill deli/restaurant in Battersea - best food I've had in a long time and well worth the cash - Just beware of women drinking espresso martinis. It kind of doubles the bill! I'm also adding this amusing photo of Katy and her sister Jo larking about in our Kazakh style hotel - I'll probably get beaten up!
As the post title suggests we also visited the Regents canal, at least a few hundred yards of it behind Kings Cross - The idea was to call in at the London Canal Museum, but it was shut so no luck there.
Wednesday 12th October
Took the car back up to it's space in Holbeck and walked back via River Lock for a quick reconnaissance mission. Horrid day so plan to move now before it gets any worse and water levels rise.

On arrival the indicator was just over into the red. The current from the arches under the station looked strong but navigable with care. So back to Clarence Dock and I'll make the move. However whilst out on my little wander the lock gates to the Dock were closed and the river level was well above that of the dock. Bugger - I'm stuck! So I spent the rest of the day carving intricate pieces of firewood - which I then obviously destroyed in seconds!

Saturday 15th Oct
Woke this am and found the dock gates open again - Yippee! Straight up to Granary Wharf / Mint Hotel onto the Leeds & Liverpool canal. First hurdle overcome - just the wind and rain to contend with now. Charged £6/night here - pretty quiet and really posh facilities at bottom of the round tower (key only available from the Waterfront Estate Office). Check out the Dark Arches under the station at the Granary Wharf Car Park - Impressive Victorian structure using over 18 million bricks - a record for the time!
Granary Wharf to Apperley Bridge

So we're away for 9am and straight into office lock. Re-familiarising with the padlock keys required for unlocking the paddles. They're really clumsy and easy to drop straight into the murky depths. St Anne's Ings lock next and then through to our first Staircase on the Leeds & Liverpool.
Rodley for lunchtime but it's after 2pm and every single shop within miles is shut. Do not visit Rodley midweek after 2pm!

Forge and Newlay Locks this afternoon, both three chamber staircases, and plenty of Swingbridges.

Moored just above Newlay at the BW Depot. Romantic meal at Sainsbury's Cafe incorporated with collecting of supplies! Horrendous weather now, heaving it down with rain. At least it held during the day, just a few blustery moments. Entertainment tonight in the form of Ratatouille!

Tuesday
Apperley Bridge to Saltaire
The bad weather has improved and it's another nice if slightly moody couple of miles onto Saltaire. From Rodley, instead of loads of locks it's a swing bridge a mile. A couple are electrically operated but the bulk heavy manual push bars. Beware if you're on your own as not all of these bridges have the chain attached to pull them shut. Luckily this time all I had to do was float in the middle and wait for Katy to do the hard work!

It's nice and quiet round this corner - Feeling nice and rural even as we skim past N Shipley. Fylde Lock is another staircase. Hoping to see the BW men but no sign of them as we pulled into the lock. A brief lapse in concentration meant we flooded the middle lock as water poured onto the grass! Paddles down - no disaster - only a couple of litres wasted! Obviously at that very moment the BW guys came by so we hopped onto the boat with a coffee to leave it to the pros.

Family of fungi at Fylde Lock - Disappointingly dark photo - wrong lens for this unfortunately.
Very quickly we pulled into the familiar picture postcard view of Saltaire. These are huge mill buildings, now without any milling but good to see they've been converted into some rather nice flats and also the HQ of Pace, as well as the posh shops and restaurant in Salt Mill itself. Had a yummy but very expensive burger in the restaurant and then checked out the Salt exhibition.

Looks ok, like the swan but losing the line under the bridge is a mistake as it no longer appears 3 dimensional. You now have to look a bit more closely to work out what's going on. I'll get over it!

Exciting post hey? Should be more of interest next week as we plan to go up to Saltaire. However the river is high for the first time since spring which may prevent navigation up to Office Lock. This was the water gauge at Leeds Lock yesterday. Just a cm away from Red.

A lot of people have been saying what a rubbish summer it's been - If that's the case then I've been very lucky.

Time Off + Sun = Trip out :-)

Tues 27th Sept

Met Rob at 10am to navigate the Footbridge - The dock was absolutely rammed so stuck my nose out and promptly parked up again (as per my previous post) at Crown Point Bridge. Half expecting some trouble here but was left alone in peace all day. Decided to go no further for now, so moved my car to somewhere safe and picked up provisions. Relieved to find the boat still there and not covered in Naan.

Evening spent listening to Radio 5 and the latest in the Carlos Tevez saga. What a tit. 250k a week and you can't be arsed. Shame as he is/was a good footballer. On another disappointing note York City lost 3-2 at Gateshead to continue their erratic form.

With my inverter currently knackered I was unable to set an alarm this morning. Rather surprised to wake at 11am. Oh well - Still sunny out there and made my move into Leeds Lock for 11.30.

Looking back to the Knostrop Flood Lock, open as usual.

Through to Knostrop Lock where NB Toby joined me along with his crew of Ian (i think) and Michelle. I like this boat - Nice shiny black affair - all fitted and painted out himself. Hopefully one day I'll be skilled enough to be able to re-paint and fit, but that's not going to be any time soon so need to keep Annie in one piece!

On to Thwaite where the moorings are still unoccupied - Tut.

A Kingfisher darted low along the river on the approach to Skelton Grange bridge - not the closest sighting but clear and colourful. Not so fortunate with the otter a guy with binoculars tried to direct me towards. That's twice now I've come across people watching otters and I didn't see them. That's something to look forward to.

Toby continued to follow me through Fishpond and Woodlesford lock before we both stopped at 2pm at Lemonroyd Marina. I really enjoy this stretch now - It's surprised me how much I like the Aire & Calder, being used to the Narrow canals, I thought the northern commercial canals were a bit dull - but there is plenty of interest.

Sat out in the Sun with book/newspaper until about 6.30 when Katy arrived from work (aww). Sun promptly set and cooled down nicely. Visit from James at 9 - good to see the little bro :-)

Thurs 29th Sept

Up early today to see KT to the car for 7am. A cool mist enveloped the canal making for a spectacular scene - a sure sign of another stifling day!

Decided to take a quick snooze and came out of hibernation at ... 1.30pm!!! This has pissed me off - I'm supposed to be making the most of the weather!

On with the Shorts and camera and out on stroll for 2pm. Took the Trans Pennine Cycle Route along the N bank (by foot) and followed the river eastwards. There are a lot of lakes around this area - some more accessible than others - plenty of wildlife around inc big Dragonflies.

Well ready for an Ice Cream at Allerton Bywater and also purchased the paper. Sat down by one of the lakes and read the paper for about an hour. Nice spot - grebes, swans, cormorant and rushes.

Heading back up to the river I noticed where they changed the course. A huge overgrown bank blocks access from the meandering old river to the course of the new.

Back along the South side, having crossed over at Caroline Bridge. On this bridge I met a rather hot and bothered looking policeman - who half-heartedly replied to my hello. He probably thought I was up to no good but I was also concerned for his welfare - so dawdled on the bridge taking photos until he was safely back on the bank. Suicide averted for now! The south bank is a slightly nicer walk, especially as there was a little shade. Some good views back down to the river and the path weaved through the berry laden autumn trees before arriving back at Lemonroyd lock shortly after 5pm.
Friday 30th Sept

Up for 9am today - another nice fresh morning. Breakfast of weetabix was shared with the swans as I was all out of bread. They didn't seem to mind at all - ignore them at your peril - one of the cygnets tried leaping into the side hatch. Don't want to think about the mess and panic if it had been successful!

Turned above the lock and watered, emptied and chopped wood. That got a few funny looks with it coming on 28 degrees - but I do like to be prepared.

A huge tanker, Humber Pride came by out the lock to dock at Lemonroyd Oil Terminal. This is the first time I've seen any sizeable commercial traffic since coming off the Trent. Really impressive sight.
Moved up to Swillington Bridge moorings for easy access to Woodlesford. Bombed up into the village to get supplies for lunch. Pleased to find a Coop, butcher and chippie close by. Celebrated with further ice-cream!

Heading back now - through Woodlesford lock for 3 where I found a very poorly rabbit - completely blind, wondering around lost. Thought it best to stay clear but sad all the same. Fishpond cleared by 4pm and Knostrop by 4.30.

Pulled in at the facilities by Leeds Lock to collect some more wood from the pile that's been there for at least 3 months. The fishermen thought I was quite mad dragging wood around in the heat. I'll need a chainsaw soon as the remaining bits are getting a bit too large for snapping and sawing with my little hand saw!

Finally back onto the visitor mooring by 6 which was thankfully already in the shade. My parallel parking skills were tested to the full. Did a decent job considering the gap was about 1 foot too short, leaving my stern out in the dock!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02785882799934131380noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6766759582877230906.post-91460282572335699252011-09-27T13:27:00.000+01:002011-10-11T14:30:56.210+01:00On the move!

Only round the corner - Chilling in the heat by Crown Point Bridge!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02785882799934131380noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6766759582877230906.post-59147135988525939432011-09-23T23:50:00.001+01:002011-10-11T14:51:35.186+01:00Residential Moorings
Finding a mooring was the major stumbling block to buying the boat - especially as I needed a proper residential mooring in order to get the credit to purchase. Anyone currently looking may want to check out Clarence Dock - there's been space here for residents ever since I moved in. This was the only available mooring I found to be practical during several months of trawling. But - if you're looking for somewhere with Sun, peaceful atmosphere and a parking place then this might not be right for you. Saying that - it is exceedingly handy for the city centre.

I've continued to keep my eyes open for other moorings and so far had little luck. Thwaite Mills at Stourton was an option for a short while - but it didn't take long for problems to arise. First of all, residential moorings are actively discouraged by BW. Especially linear moorings on the canal/river itself. This particular policy meant my move to Thwaite Mills became a non-starter. That is unless I replaced all my steel with wood and turned up in a traditional working boat, or had a business license and run a business which gave something back to the waterways. Whilst I can see why BW want to keep everything clean and 'traditional', I really don't see the issue with residential boaters, as long as there are policies in place, saying what you can and can't do and these are properly enforced. As a non law breaking boater with an interest in the outdoors I would make every effort to keep the mooring tidy, adding 24 hr security at the mooring and helping out where possible. So this is rather irritating.

In fact even at Clarence Dock there are many rules - few of which it appears are taken very seriously.

These range from the usual such as outstaying your welcome on the visitor moorings (which i think can normally be policed on a common sense basis) to more obscure rules which prevent you hanging washing out on the boat, having anything on the pontoons, no bikes / storage on your roof, smokeless fuels only and absolutely no maintenance at the dock. All of these are routinely ignored by many to varying degrees. Being quite new to the scene, I've tried not to upset anyone - and apart from spending a week on the visitor mooring in July and burning a little wood (to get it going) in May, have stuck to the rules. Now i don't want to go off on one but whilst we have many rules - the tennants in the surrounding flats appear to get away with lobbing stuff down at us from the balconies, late night noise etc and all sorts. I think I'll start recording the fallout on the blog too! Thankfully now it's cooled down over the last couple of weeks, incidents have become rarer as they keep the balcony doors shut!

Last night I had a quick trip over to the River Derwent and met a guy living aboard his 25ft cruiser. Amazingly he pays less to moor there over a year than I do in a single month! Now I was aware that CD was about twice as expensive as your average BW mooring but this is crazy. For this price he has a riverside mooring with road access, basic facilities to empty and water. No shore power, but this needn't be a problem - especially if fitted with Solar panels and the like. He took great pleasure in showing me his 40 inch 3D tele running from an 150W inverter (allegedly!). So this could save me 5k a year in mooring fees - which would however be slightly offset by the 2.5-3k cost of commuting to Leeds. I'll keep quiet for now as to where it is, at least until I get my interest registered.

So good luck to those looking for moorings - especially up north. But if you're in the Midlands, there appears to be a new marina opening every month!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02785882799934131380noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6766759582877230906.post-76736625312842407492011-09-19T12:31:00.000+01:002011-09-20T10:14:28.745+01:00Two Interviews and a Wedding! It's been a busy few weeks away from the water, I've had 2 interviews at work in the last two weeks, nightshifts wedged in between, and performed best man duties at my brother Phil's wedding so kept busy!

A 50 % success rating in the interviews means I can continue in my current post thank god. I shall bite my tongue regards the usefulness of the process itself!

On a more positive note I've also had the honour of being Best Man at Phil's wedding in Bishopthorpe, York. Congratulations Phil and Pauline on what was a great day - quite surreal finally attending the wedding of my own bro! Obviously there had been a few nerves on my part (Phil and Pauline just seemed really happy!) especially around delivery of the speech. But, whilst I'm sure the content could have been funnier, feedback was all good and I felt pretty pleased! And Phil relieved that I kept the worst stories to myself! Good to see so much of the family, many for the first time.

Back to work at the weekend. Hope to get a chance to move out of the dock before then. Bit worried I'll be choked with Soggy bread & Naan before I do! So frustrating being behind the footbridge but hey ho - BW Rob is usually very helpful, it's just impossible to be spontaneous. And at least there's not been any more glass bottles and dirty crockery smashing on the roof. But still no sign of the return of Crusader or Martini as yet which does make me feel like I have a bullseye target up there!

Some may have heard of this on the news last year! This funny old fellow is currently offering free tours around the vessel parked in front of the Armouries on the visitor mooring. Donations for upkeep accepted. Obviously it takes a lot of cash and effort to maintain such a technological marvel! Interior is also fitted out with all the necessary controls you'd expect on a U Boat!
There are maybe 8 spaces on short finger pontoons, and due to lack of turning space I couldn't park nose first - this meant balancing on the gunwale with the shopping/laptop to get out! £66 for 4 nights berth. 17:00 it was time for the commute to Leeds for work - Night shifts - oh joy!

Both parents bailed out on my trip up to Ripon - good chance to practice some solo cruising! Bit grey but pleasant enough and more importantly no wind. About on hour up to Beningbrough, past the Nid (nice spot)

Looks rather imposing and deep for my first solo attempt. Parked on pontoon and went to see what the crack was. Cruiser in the lock coming down so asked if they could leave gates open. In and parked against the wall - great! But it's a long slimy climb with the centre rope up the ladder - nearly lost footing in front of the gongoozlers. That would have been embarrassing! But all went well and chatted to a couple of interested cafe goers (there's one at the lock)

Above the lock - very busy - no space at visitor moorings -crammed full of cruisers. Banks now a little lower but still no view over the willows on the bank. Nice Ouse/Ure sign - made the customary urghhh noise! The fence is to stop the sheep eating the sign seeds, meaning other new signs can grow too.
Bit late but here I'll be adding the records from the epic 2 1/2 week journey back up to Leeds from the backwater of Ramsey in Cambridgeshire. Highlights include running over baby moorhens, a near capsize on the Nene and a trip to Leicester A&E ! Highlights of a more positive manner include the AMAZING weather, the hunt for navigation lights in Nottingham, and the tension approaching Keadby!

Ok here's the rough journal that's been kicking around since we came back. Apologies for the poor grammar, and distorted perpective - All has been kindly recorded by my trusty crew, some of which have better language skills than others! I'll endeavour to tidy things up and add further points of interest and photos in due course.
& met us as we went through Benwick (1.30 p.m.) and waved us on our way onto Stanground Lock where we were booked in for 4.00 p.m.

Arrived on the dot, having had a wonderful start to our voyage. Herons, swans, cormorant (!) spotted, and a family of moorhens who got washed by our wash (the Mid-level dykes being very narrow) – I assured Tim that they were designed to swim, and they scurried back together as a family straight away. Recommended to take on cheaper diesel at Stuart Holmes Chandlery, and bought a life ring and line there. Filled up to capacity with another 55L (£52). Then we really were on our way.
Went on to Peterborough town moorings for sandwich lunch Tim is an excellent driver. Crew ravenous. On to Orton Lock.
Only opened yesterday after refurbishment – electronic sluice with pointy gates at top end. Finally moored up at Peterborough Sailing Club where everyone most helpful and Annie much admired. V. persistent cuckoo!!
8 hours cruising and no mutiny on first day!

23 April 2011 : Saturday Day 2
Good night’s sleep – cuckoo woke first at 6.10 a.m.!!! Hearty breakfast at 8.30 and cast off at 9.15 a.m. Wide river Nene, and an hour or so to Alton Lock with 2 narrow boats following. We had the advantage of sharing 2 locks on the way up, once with a cruiser and once with another narrow boat.

Met Thomas the Tank Engine at Wansford and exchanged Whistles!
(Fotheringay where King Richard III was born in 1452 and Mary, Queen of Scots, was tried and executed in 1587). Katy and Tim went for a walk to the village. So hot we decided on a decent break, and didn’t set off again till 4.30 p.m. to Ashline Lock.
Once through took the first opportunity to find an unofficial mooring - where a herd of young bullocks took much interest! I was left by my crew to face securing the mooring pins, and they just kept on pressing up against us! I'm generally not scared of your average cow but this was slighlty disconcerting!
24 April 2011 : Easter Sunday : Day 3 Happy Easter one and all!!!
Another beautiful morning after a peaceful night. 2 narrow boats already ahead of us, and we cast off by 9.45 a.m. Next stop Oundle Marine for “facilities”. Bit of a breeze today which could alter approach to moorings! Sharp right turn into Oundle Marina at 11.30 a.m. filled up with water, called at chandlery, and used disposal – not kept clean! People came to admire Annie, and very sociable. Moved off the water point and moored up across the Marina – Tim and Katy walked to Tesco’s.

We passed some rather chavvy private moorings with awful old pop music blaring, but people friendly enough and rang owner of new and empty Marina who said we could use his pontoons, so moored at Lower Ringstead at 7.00 p.m. Huge expanse of water, half a dozen boats, no facilities, but safe haven for the night. Terns, herons, grebes.
6.5 hours cruising and 9 locks

25 April 2011 : Easter Monday Day 4
26 April 2011 : Tuesday Day 5
Grey day, much cooler, and a bit of a breeze. Breakfasted and away by 9.00 a.m. with the plan to meet Tom at Becket’s Park around lunch time. Arrived at noon, but Marina fully booked for a big BW meet next weekend, so cruised on to Town Moorings. Tim tested the central heating – v efficient, and then Tim and Katy went 2 minutes into town for supplies. We could go no further without a BW key, 3 miles away at Gayton. Tim contemplated jogging, but we decided it was best to get Tom to call for one. He was with us by 2.30 p.m. with a key, and we unloaded car. Pen exchanged for Tom, so fresh crew on board!!! Cast off by 4.00 p.m. and went on between lock 14 & 13 alongside a now unavigable River Nene to break new crew in gently and leave main lock flight for the morning.

27 April 2011 : Wednesday Day 6
12.30 set off to find lunch ...... Bugbrooke by 1pm and The Old Wharf for an open air lunch with Annie moored by the pub garden. Mussels, Lamb shank and fish and chips enjoyed!

2.30 off into the Buckby Flight .... oh woe! .... back onto heavy broad locks ... such hard work often hard for Tom to shift, never mind Katy. No complaints however with scenery like this.
Into rolling hill country with the canal contouring as long as possible. Ascend Watford Flight 7 locks, including two 3 lock staircases.
Gusty wind pushing us about somewhat and Tim lit the fire at lunchtime ... very cosy.
Yelvertoft BW depot watered and toilet emptied.
Welford Junction .... moored by 6.20pm to south of North Kilworth Wharf.
Made big bacon and things omelette for supper. Sunny day, cool in the shade.
29 April 2011 Friday Day 8
Royal Wedding Day! Radio battery is dead but at least we've got the bunting up on the cratch. It's not tacky at all!

Rained early this morning around 5.30am which caught Tom out (can't think what he was doing on the towpath at that time!). Grey Day but steadily brightening.
Departed 8.45 for the Foxton Flight. No chance to stop at North Kilworth Wharf due to lack of available mooring.

Through Husbands Bosworth Tunnel, 7 miles to Foxton by 11.20, to start our descent towards the Soar and the Trent. Wonderful rolling hills with copses and spinneys and the canal winding along hillsides as the land began to fall away to the North. The cut is shallow here with many overhanging trees - busy and tricky going. We ran aground just the once, taking emergency avoiding action, requiring some reverse gear and encouragement from the pole.

Queued for almost 2 hours waiting for our turn through to Foxton Locks (two sets of 5 lock staircase). Down to the bottom for 2pm.
Really impressive and tidy feature - with plenty of folks watching us go through. Kids more than happy to help push the locks open! Watered, and used facilities at BW station. Tasty sausage and bacon baps from the little shop! Bottom of the flight:
30 April 2011 Saturday Day 9
Tom up 7am and bedroom converted back to living room and breakfast fruit chopped. As Tim and Katy got out onto the towpath for their morning cigarette Katy twisted/sprained her ankle .... great pain, horrible crunch! Used cold compress and elastic bandage from Tim’s mountain first aid kit. Must rest it and cannot bear weight.
Penny notified to sort out possible A&E facilities if needed.
Tom drives and Tim locks today with strong head/cross wind ... very frustrating/ troublesome waiting for locks. Still managed 20 locks (all double again after Foxton,) bottom gates usually open increasing work for Tim. Missing Katy as second locking crew.
Decided to run through Leicester today aiming for Birstall at minimum.
Canal skirts the southern fringe of suburbs, running past the bottom of gardens and industrial sites and joining the R.Sence, then the R.Soar with annoyingly spaced locks and the wind blowing gates open and the boat about too.
Scraped a lot of paint today!
The weirs through city have no warning signs or protection for the boats ... have to rely on warnings/maps in the guide.
Moor briefly mid city for drinks where canal side well landscaped ... noted secure moorings by city centre on pontoon with locked gates.
The Canal north down Soar valley was very dirty with many derelict and active industrial sites. Thought we were stymied by Limekiln lock where BW maintainence boats had blown free blocking the canal. Luckily we nudged past. Water below lock covered with plastic bottles .... worst rubbish of the route ..... but several very fine city herons!
Birstall riverside moorings look good but Tim wanted to get further and we found a visitor mooring in Raynway marina in old gravel workings about a mile further on at Thurmaston, above Thurmaston lock 7pm. Tim and Annie performed an interesting waltz in a strong wind to get into our mooring.
Boat notes: going well, automatic bilge pump not working properly, needs checking and hooking up. Prop shaft gland dripping steadily and does need the pump system working properly. Found something to free the rear deck hatch and the weed hatch. Checked prop, bit of rope and plastic ... pretty good after such dirty section of canal.
Chatted to many residents of the marina who explained that they mainly cruise down the Soar to the Trent. Getting into cruiser land.

Depart by 10am onto a widening and deepening River Soar, past busy riverside pubs. Managed to share the locks a number of times which reduces the effort of locking through as well as being sociable chatting to other crews. Some of the narrow boats on the move were very finely set up in contrast to many of the long term moored boats piled high with wood and gardens of all sorts on their roofs.
Met a dangerous assortment of day hire boats as the day went on .... family occupied ones reasonable, but one full of young men, already drunk and with no idea what they were doing .... did they ever reach the pub they were heading for or did they capsize? .... most were sitting on the roof!!!
Fuelled and watered at Sileby Wharfe ..... 111 litres diesel to fill (all used since Stanground) (68 hours running over 10 days. )
Able to make really good time on the river despite traffic .... passing small towns Mountsorrel and Barrow on Soar with open water-meadows often with overhanging willows.

Advised that there is a major waterways festival at Loughborough and that the canal is lined with double-moored boats. Arrange to meet Penny and James at the wharf after the centre above lock ........
Arrive by 3.30 ?? and luckily find a mooring next to Staples car park.

Decided to take Katy to A&E at Leicester ..... Penny has maps and instructions and they head off ...... Tom, Tim and James head for the festival which was over for the day. Katy’s ankle x-rayed but nothing broken (old chips showed up!!!), however, as it was so swollen they put plaster of Paris pot on, and gave her crutches! P and K back by 9 with Chinese takeaway.
T & P drive home
11 Miles 7 Locks easy day? 5 ½ hours cruising.
2 May 2011 Monday Day 11
New crew – Tim, Katy and James
Set off by 8.40 a.m., and shared 2 locks with nice green boat. Ducklings and goslings galore. Lock 4 shared with “Barn Owl”, and Lock 5 open as it was a flood control lock. Stopped at Kegby and got replacement gas cylinder (£21.99).
Arranged to meet Pete, Michele and little James at Trent Lock for lunch.

James jr happy running up and down the boat, pressing radio buttons before falling over. Lunch at the posh but busy pub. Left at 3.15 for Sawley Marine in the hope of finding magnetic navigation lights required for the stretch of the Trent at Newark. Through Sawley Lock at 3.45 p.m. – mechanised! Tim and James emptied toilet, and set off to look for navigation lights. Nothing doing. Tim rang cousin Liz & Dave, and they popped over from their mooring on the Erewash. Lovely to see them both (but no photo). May well need Dave's mechanical expertise further down the line. Stayed at Sawley for the night in rough conditions.
8 locks 4 ½ hours cruising.

3 May Tuesday Day 12
Cast off 9.50 a.m., tricky turn at Sawley, slight bump to pirate boat! But nicely done.
Castle Lock at 12.50 and moored. James and Tim back at 3.30 after Sainsbury supplies trip, but still no suitable lights, plenty of food for the trip down the trent though. Pasties for lunch at 4.00 p.m. Tim set off on foot to a bike shop and back by 4.25 with 2 sets of lights. On our way by 4.40 p.m.
Just short of Stoke Lock 7.20 p.m.

4 May Wednesday Day 13
Set off 9.10 a.m. Informed by lady lock keep at Gunnesthorpe Lock that a gravel barge is grounded at the morrings at Cromwell Lock, which could hold us up as we had hoped to get there tonight and catch the tide in the morning.

On our way again by 2.40 p.m. to Cromwell Lock – need to empty the toilet.
Tim called ahead to Cromwell Lock, and we heard that the barge was cleared, but we won’t be able to make it through tidal section in one go. Will set off from Cromwell Lock at 12 noon for 3 hour run to Torksey tomorrow, then plan to leave Torksey at 11.15 for Keadby 3 ¾ hours.
3.15 p.m. stopped at Nether Lock to empty toilet and have a cuppa. Arrived at Cromwell Lock 4.50 p.m. Tea = BBQ. Now we're stopped at the head of the tidal trent - a little frustrating that we can't bomb on but that would obviously be stupid! Plenty of tips from other boaters regards the tides. More horror stories than good but I believe the good stories much more.
5 locks 5 hours 45 mins cruising

5 May Thursday Day 14
Cast off at 11.15 a.m. Tim and James secured the navigational bike lights and sorted anchor.
Tidal stretch of Trent between Cromwell and Torksey. Spotted several cormorants, both flying and perching atop poles, oyster catchers, kestrels, grey lags and lots of bullocks.
Torksey at 2.30 p.m. Apart from a couple of sunken islands / sand banks that was pretty straight forward. We followed one other narrowboat down to Torksey. Barely noticed the tide until making the turn into Torksey itself!
6 May Friday Day 15
Change of crew : Tim, Katy, Penny – Cheers James!
Tom and Penny down to Torksey lock in James’s car, and James and Tom saw us off at 11.00 with lock keeper’s permission to go on to the Trent. Tim made an expert turn onto the River, and once going realised that the camera needed fixing for the day! Gainsborough sadly v. uninspiring 12.50 p.m. Lunch on the move, and past West Stockwith Lock at 1.20 p.m. Fairly stormed down river with the tide and made Keadby Lock by 3.15.
Tim advised to go past, do a wide turn and make the right turn into the deep lock going upstream. It felt as though he’d owned the boat for years, and all went v. smoothly. The lock keeper dropped hooks down so we could get fastened to the capstans above, and dropped the ends back down to us.
Immediately out of the lock into the road swing bridge, which the lock keeper kindly sorted for us, immediately followed by a pedestrian swing bridge, and immediately followed by rail swing bridge at Keadby Canal Bridge. We had to wait for a train, which came straight at us!!!

All bridges cleared by 4.25 p.m. The canal ran alongside the railway for long stretches. Pen then steered while Tim did the next 3 swing bridges, and we moored at 6.30 p.m. just after Maud’s Swing Bridge.
1 lock 6 bridges 8 hours travelling 37.5 miles downstream with a following tide!!!
7 May Saturday Day 16 Happy Birthday Pete
Felt a long night for Pen last night, as she slept with her head pointing down and didn’t sleep well! Set off by 10.15 a.m. Wyke Mill Lift Bridge interesting.

Took on 66L diesel 75% domestic/25% travelling to fill her up (£65.54, at Blue Water Marina, Thorne. On the way again by 11.20 a.m.
Pedestrian Swing Bridge out of Thorne Centre jammed half open – so had to wait 20 minutes for the engineer. A busy bridge as there were plenty of people waiting to get across.

Safely through with plenty of swing bridges and traditional locks, no wind, dull, and we were treated to a small shower. First day time rain. Pretty area.
Lunch at 1.00 p.m. at The New Inn, Stainforth. Excellent fish and chips and Tim had Trippers Mixed Grill – about as much as he could manage and that was the small version (the Mixed Grill proper was on a plate about 75cm diameter!!!). Katy managed her crutches well up the slope to the Inn. Set of at 2.30 p.m. to service point where another narrow boat already berthed and taking on water. Tim did an amazing sweeping turn to get to the water point. It took over an hour and a half to complete watering and facilities stop! Never fill up at Bramwith Lock Sanitary Station – slowest tap in the world! Then Pen took us through v. long Sykehouse Lock (no pictures as I was busy running up and down!) and over the Don Viaduct which was quite interesting, and Tim took care of complicated bridges and locking – Pen completed first lock of this trip!
Tim took us over the Went Viaduct, and we moored up at 7.00 p.m. between Syke House Bridge and Great Heck – junction of Aire and Calder and new canal.
Moored on the right for the evening. Aire & Calder ahead.
8 May Sunday Day 17
Watched Alice in Wonderland. Heavy rain all night, but a good sleep and a refreshed sunny a.m. with no wind. Cast off at 10.05, and went through Ferrybridge at 1.00 p.m., past Kellingly Colliery to Knottingley. Pretty canal. Saw Reklaw of York – subject of oil painting done by Tom at Foss Islands back in 1970 when living in St Saviourgate!

Tim saw a kingfisher, and there were several herons on their perches. Moored at Lemonroyd at 4.45 p.m. after a very long and very deep lock (Lemonroyd Lock Below!).
Tom came over for supper, and Tim and Katy produced a fine chilli con carne. I must admit the prospect of arriving back in Leeds is slightly depressing.
5 ½ hours cruising 6 locks
